Vectorworks Landmark user Dirtworks, PC, an internationally recognized landscape architecture firm based in New York, is featured in “On the Horizon: The First Annual Exhibition of NY ASLA Awards 2010.” Hosted by the Horticultural Society of New York in partnership with the New York chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), this exhibition runs from April 6 to April 23 and includes the 2010 ASLA award-winning projects.

Dirtworks is a 2010 Merit Award recipient for the Joel Schnaper Memorial Garden at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center. “The Schnaper Garden was designed with a basic premise: to provide opportunity and choice. Opportunity for each individual to connect with nature in their own way, on their own terms and at their own pace,” said David Kamp, FASLA, LF, founder of Dirtworks. “That premise has served the garden well over the years, and it is an honor to have that simple idea recognized. The 2010 ASLA NY Merit Award, the second for the Schnaper Garden, having also received the ASLA Merit Award in 1995, reinforces the belief of the power of nature to enhance our everyday lives and that the connection we make to nature helps make us human.”

The Joel Schnaper Memorial Garden is a 3,000-square-foot rooftop terrace which provides therapeutic space for the health care center’s AIDS care unit. The project was made possible entirely by small donations and volunteers and serves as a peaceful oasis for long-term care patients and their visitors. The garden received national recognition when it was featured in the 2008 documentary GardenStory on PBS in the United States.

In addition to receiving the ASLA Merit Awards, David Kamp will be honored on April 21 with the Mary White Commitment Award by ArchCare/Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in recognition of his sustained pro bono work on the project for the past 15 years.

Thank you, Dirtworks, for continuing to touch the lives of others through excellent design.
