This morning the Hiv Aids monument was inaugurated by Eberhard van der Laan, the mayor of the city of Amsterdam. French artist Jean Michel Othoniel designed a wonderfully evocative, yet restrained artwork which takes the shape of an abacus to comemmorate people who died from aids or who are living with hiv. Placed at the waterside, near Amsterdam Central Station, it is a meeting place and a site of reflection. Jean Michel donated his design to the city of Amsterdam, refusing a fee. I am proud to be on the committee who selected this touching sculpture which is a great contribution to the city's public artworks. Bravo Jean-Michel, bravo Names Project!
