Photo report: Memorial sheet was laid on Memorial Day for AIDS victims in Zaporozhye

Annually, every day on the third Sunday in May, a Memorial Day for AIDS-related deaths is celebrated everywhere. So, on May 13 various townspeople gathered at the Boulevard Shevchenko in Zaporozhye to honor the memory of not only deceased fellow countrymen, but also all the people who became victims of the epidemic. About this the Zaporozhye City Center for Social Services for the Family, Children and Youth reported to "ReporterUA".

To date, 710 young city dwellers have died of AIDS in the Zaporozhye region. Yesterday, the names of the victims of this epidemic of the 21st century were written on a memorial page. On World Day of Memory of AIDS Dead Men, Ukraine joins the International Movement "Names", which originated in 1987 in the United States and today has a memorial of 82 thousand names.

The Great Quilt (a memorial cloth) is a symbol of grief and a great tragedy of the aftermath of the epidemic that claimed the lives of almost 21,000 Ukrainians. Quilta's multi-colored mosaic better than any words suggests that HIV can affect everyone, regardless of age, gender, nationality, or lifestyle. "Every day, AIDS takes lives of eight Ukrainians. The worst thing is that we lose the younger generation - the future of our state; because most people whose lives take AIDS are young people aged 25-49, " says Lilia Podkopayeva, Olympic champion, Goodwill Ambassador to Ukraine on HIV/AIDS.
