Since September 1995, stones lie in front of the Martini-Church in memory of people who died of the consequences of AIDS. The stones carry the names of acquaintances, relatives and friends from Brunswick, the region and the whole world. They stand for loss, mourning and despair, in addition for solidarity, commitment and strength.
The mind space shall give room for mourning about the loss of loved ones, and is developed upon the initiative of artist Tom Fecht in co-operation with the German AIDS Foundation. Since 29 September 1995, there is a mind space in Brunswick. It was installed in the context of the 10th anniversary of the Braunschweiger Aids-Hilfe, and is situated in the middle of the city center on the side of the Martini-Church facing the district court.
Heinz Kaiser brought the project for the Braunschweiger AIDS-Hilfe into our city. Before, he had numerous discussions with the city administration and the parish to find a suitable place. It was very important to have the mind space not at the outskirts of the town, but in the middle of life. At the side panel of the Martini-Church, there are already two historical epitaphs, which remind of the deceased. Our mind space is directly in front of those two epitaphs on the square - the ideal place was found!
The mind space is integrated into urban life such as guided city tours, services and weekly markets. For us as Braunschweiger Aids-Hilfe, the mind space receives special attraction on World AIDS Day, Gay Pride Week (Sommerlochfestival) and again and again for setting new stones. For relatives and friends, it is an important area of memory and mourning. Often flowers lie down on the place.
Since the initial installation in 1995, we supplemented the mind space 'Names and Stones' seven times: 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2011. Currently, 68 name stones lie in front of the Martini-Church.
