The AIDS Quilt in the Philippines was born out of an inspiring experience at the AIDS Impact Conference in Brighton, UK 1994 where several AIDS Quilts coming from different countries were on display. This was followed by another experience at the exchange visit hosted by the mayor of San Francisco where a downtown display of the US AIDS Memorial Quilt was ongoing. The display showed the magnitude of the epidemic, it humanizes the epidemic and showed an enormous number of people who passed away from AIDS.
To increase advocacy and educate more community people about HIV and AIDS, the Philippine panels were hand sewn starting with only 4 panels. The intent was to commemorate the four individuals who in their own way fought for the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS. The four panels were inaugurated by the City Mayor of Manila at the celebration of the AIDS Candlelight Memorial on May 21, 1995.
From there on, the panels grew in number to show that Filipinos are getting infected and that it is increasing in number. Apart from the live testimonial of a person living with HIV, the AIDS Quilt panels are the greatest AIDS education and advocacy tool of all times.
To date, there are now 347 panels. Each of the panel is hand sewn by people living with HIV/AIDS, family members, volunteers, or friends. The materials are a combination of fabric, trimmings, accessories that are generated from solicitation and donations. Old clothes are recycled to form part of the panels. More are being hand sewn, patches put together and designs being developed.
The panels are being displayed twice a year in different places frequented by people, in school campuses and workplaces. The panels have also travelled to different countries where there are lots of migrant Filipinos: USA, Sweden, South Africa, Netherlands, Thailand, and Spain.
