Symbols of the fight against AIDS
Quilt against AIDS

The global HIV/AIDS epidemic requires the united efforts of all people on the planet. This explains the need for symbols that can be understood without translation by everyone on Earth. One of the first such symbol was the pink triangle of the Silents=Death movement. This movement united members of sexual minorities and therefore could hardly claim universal acceptance. They were calling for the attention of governments and nations to the problems of HIV-positive people even before the international programs to fight AIDS existed. Their actions were sometimes defiant, destructive. Another of their symbols, the red, bloody palm print, was not supported by the world community. But their efforts were not in vain, and today the symbols of the fight against AIDS are known to everyone.

The main one is a red ribbon in the shape of an inverted "V" ("Victoria" - victory). A symbol of defeat, if you like. The volunteers of the Young to Young movement also take this to heart because the letter V stands for both "volontaire" and "vita", i.e. "life".
But the other symbol of the fight against AIDS, the quilt, was not used by the volunteers until recently. Simply because there were no AIDS victims among their relatives.

In 1987 when American Cleve Jones sewed a commemorative quilt for his best friend Mark Feldman who had died of AIDS most people all over the world thought that the epidemic would pass them by. But that first quilt, a painting on fabric commemorating a loved one, became a powerful symbol that changed the way nations and governments looked at AIDS. Tens of thousands of people around the world are sewing commemorative cloths for friends, loved ones, sisters and brothers, parents and children who have been taken from them by AIDS. They don't want the names of their loved ones to disappear forever behind the numbers of statistics.
A quilt is not just a picture on fabric. It is a patchwork with the names of those who died of AIDS. In the everyday life of many peoples (including Russian) the patchwork quilt symbolizes the warmth of home comfort, protection from trouble and injustice. The English word "quilt" does not mean "scraps," that is, many, but "quilt," that is, something stitched, sewn together for warmth, goodness, protection. This quality of quilting was also embraced by the volunteers of the Young to Young movement.

Every year on December 1, the World AIDS Day, Novgorod Medical College holds a contest for the best quilt composition. The content of student work is not a memorial list of the dead, but a call to the living, a reminder of the threat, an appeal to the mind and heart.
Volunteer Yana Petrova's work won the contest in 2010. She attracted real people to create the quilt - HIV-positive drug addicts, who are under treatment in one of the hospitals in Velikiy Novgorod. These people who realized the depth of the tragedy that befell them, placed their notes - messages of warning by their peers - on the cloth. That is the value of the quilt as a symbol of connection of mind and will of different people.
The 10 fabrics sewn together are our 2010 quilt. A symbol of the unity of mind and heart in the fight against AIDS. Read about other winners of the Month of the fight against AIDS on our web-site.
