IV International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific, Manila, 25-29 October 1997
After the official opening ceremonies, President Ramos joined his wife, Amelita, in unveiling an AIDS monument, a sculpture by Filipino artist Gabriel Barredo. Barredo, who has lost friends and relatives to AIDS, said his work entitled "Pain" to convey a message.
