When the original AIDS Memorial Quilt was displayed for the first time in Washington, DC in October 1987, it was only three months after the death of Tom Waddell, founder of the Gay Games. Like the NAMES Project settled in San Francisco, the Federation of Gay Games created a special 12 x 12 foot quiltblok to honor all sporters who have died from AIDS, Tom Waddell being one of them. This special blok was displayed for the first time at Gay Games III in Vancouver in August 1990. On Gay Games IV held 1994 in New York City, the core blok was accompanied by a signature quilt where everybody could remember a loved one. Since then, the making of signature quilts has become a tradition at the Gay Games.
The Gay Games Memorial Quilt always stayed a separate entity cared for by the Federation of Gay Games. It consists of the official FGG memorial quilt and the signature quilts created at every Gay Games.
