In cooperation with the NAMES Project Foundation, Grace Cathedral continuously displays a portion of the AIDS Memorial Quilt hanging at the rear of the Interfaith AIDS Memorial Chapel. Within the chapel, the quilt block is rotated on a regular basis, representing the tens of thousands of names and memories that are sewn into the fabric. Each block is made up of eight panels measuring 90 by 180 cm (3 by 6 feet) created in homes across the country by friends, lovers, and families to remember the life of a person lost to AIDS.
Grace Cathedral has displayed Quilt sections since 1988, a year after the NAMES Project was founded in San Francisco. Since 1992 they were hung in the cathedral nave every fall, before the Project moved to Atlanta in 2001.
