The AIDS Memorial Garden at The Alfred was opened with Fairfield House. Following the closure of Fairfield Hospital in Melbourne and the transfer of HIV service to The Alfred Hospital in 1996, the Alfred began work on a HIV palliative care unit. The HIV affected community were keen to have a memorial garden incorporated into the design as there had been a well established memorial garden at Fairfield Hospital (this garden is still in existence). The community were intimately involved in the design of the memorial and Paul Bangay, a leading Australian Landscape designer, designed the garden and through his extensive industry contacts organized significant donations to allow it to be built. The garden does not profile individual names but acts as a memorial to all and a space for reflection and ceremonies. The site is accessible to the public from Moubray Street, Prahran.Victoria HIV/AIDS Service at the Alfred
