The association Projecte dels NOMS (NAMES Project) in Barcelona presented the AIDS Memorial Quilt for the first time on World AIDS Day 1st of December 1993. The mission of the Quilt is to make the pandemic visible and to create awareness in our society. The Quilt allows Projecte dels NOMS to show the reality of HIV and to remember all persons who have died of AIDS. The Quilt sections (every section is made of 8 individual panels) are displayed during the celebration of AIDS Memorial Day in Barcelona every year since 1994 in the month of May.
During the celebration of 1st December, the Quilt sections are also exhibited on the balconies of public institutions and government buildings in Barcelona. The Quilt sections of Projecte dels NOMS have been displayed in all parts of Spain and participate regularly in international exhibitions, currently organized by the International AIDS Prevention Initiative in New York. As of May 2012, Projecte dels NOMS has in custody and conserves 30 sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
