The Wollongong AIDS Memorial was created by ACON Illawarra in front of their old Wollongong office in the 90s. In 2013, the Wollongong ACON office closed, and the memorial was moved to Sydney for safe keeping.
In 2020, ACON reached out to find a to investigate options for finding a permanent home for the memorial in Wollongong. Following community consultation, ACON reached out to Council and requested that the memorial be installed at the Wollongong Memorial Gardens in Unanderra.
Council supported ACON, and on 10 July 2023 the Wollongong AIDS Memorial was rededicated in the presence of ACON Community Health Promotion Officer Josef Garrington with performances of the Kiama Illawarra Pride Choir.
